Cracovia climb back to summit
Saturday, 26 June 2004
Poland's oldest football club KS Cracovia are back in the top-flight after a 20-year absence thanks to their 8-0 aggregate win against KS Górnik Polkowice in the promotion/relegation play-off.
Former champions
The five-time Polish champions qualified for the match after finishing third in the second division, while Polkowice completed the season third from the bottom in the Ekstraklasa.
First-leg goals
Cracovia took advantage of playing their first leg at their Krakow home with two early goals. Midfield player Piotr Giza scored both, while defender Lukasz Skrzynski and forward Piotr Bania doubled the lead in the second half.
Repeat scoreline
Wojciech Stawowy's team dominated the second game in Polkowice and won 4-0 again. This time, Marcin Bojarski opened the scoring before Krzysztof Przytula added two more and Lukasz Szczoczarz rounded off the scoring.
Krakow derby looms
Cracovia will join Krakow neighbours Wisla Kraków in the Polish top flight next season. Also taking their place in the top league are second division winners and runners-up MKS Pogon Szczecin and MKS Zaglebie Lubin, who replace the relegated SPN Widzew Lódz and MKS Swit Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki.
